Proactive Versus Reactive: Which One Are You?

Are you Proactive or Reactive?

 How do you know?

 How can you change?

 Time to dig in…the decision is yours…you are in control of one person at all times: YOU

 According to (2019), “If you are proactive, you make things happen, instead of waiting for them to happen to you. Active means "doing something." The prefix pro- means "before." If you are proactive, you are ready before something happens. The opposite is being reactive, or waiting for things to unfold before responding.”

 Which one do you think is going to help you more in life?

 Now…being proactive is doing things like building a schedule for yourself to ensure you finish your tasks for the day AND create the time to work on yourself – whether that be exercise and nutrition, school, reading a personal development book – whatever it may be. You are being the person who gets stuff done because you are not making excuses for why you don’t have time to do extra things in your life. Think about that as you continue to read.

 Maya Angelou once said, “If you don't like something, change it. If you can't change it, change your attitude.” The number of things you accomplish or don’t accomplish in your life is directly related to your attitude. Life is life. There is absolutely NOTHING you can do about some of the things that happen to you in life. However, instead of thinking about how it is happening TO you, why not think about it as life happening FOR you? Think about everything that has happened in your life. Everything you have gone through has made you the person you are today. Are you proud of that person or not? If not, CHANGE IT! Make it to where you can be proud! Stop living in fear. Stop living your life to be comfortable and get out of your comfort zone. There is something in you that is telling you that there is more in life for you than you are allowing at this time.

 Take ownership in your life. Create the life you want. If you are an unhappy person and good things are happening, you will create more unhappiness. Think about it. This happens more than we realize. This has happened to me so many times I can’t even count. The more things would happen, the more I shut down. By the time I was in my mid-30’s, I had so much I should have been grateful for. Instead, I was still searching for meaning in my life. It took me up until about the age of 38 before I finally started realizing the only person who was making the negative in my life thrive was me. By this time, people who did not know me, thought I had it together. I was far from that. I was still lost. I was still chasing what I THOUGHT I was supposed to do and be.

 One day I finally woke up and said enough was enough. When we see people on social media, they may “look” happy. They “look” healthy. The thing we don’t realize is that total health doesn’t just include what you look like on the outside. It’s how you feel. It’s the light that allows you to glow on a regular basis. It’s the natural happiness that occurs when you are finally letting go of the fear that is holding you back and you decide to take action in your life to make it better.

 The journey is continuous. There is NEVER a linear path. You will constantly have to make choices. A famous quote from Law of Attraction Coaching states, “doubt kills more dreams that failure ever will.” We are going to fail. It is inevitable. It has taken me years to finally allow myself to be successful, but I have to get out there and stop being afraid to fail. I am going to fail. The failures are what make me better. The failures are what drive me to become better. If we just go out and crush it everyday, there is no challenge. We have nothing else to work for. That is not an exciting life. Failure is the driver that allows us to crush our dreams and believe in ourselves more and more each day.

 Maybe you are at a point in your life where you have a fear of the unknown. I was there on so many occasions. I have held myself back from so many things and even to this day, I continue to struggle with things I may not be so good at. Nevertheless, I know that I have to continue. I have to fail my way to success. I have to keep my head up, be proud of the person I am today, be proud of all the adversity and the mistakes that I’ve made. I have to take ownership of my own actions. I have to know that I am in total control…not of the things I can’t control, but of me. I am always in control of how I go forward in this life.

 So, are you going to be proactive or reactive? Are you going to wait for life to happen to you so that you can get flustered and frustrated when things don’t go your way? Or are you going to take control, schedule your day, take time for you, and learn how to be appreciative of the things you have instead of focusing on what you don’t have? Think about the way you are living your life now. Do you operate from a proactive state or are you a reactive being? Fact is, humans are naturally reactive. It takes more effort to become proactive. It also takes work to stay in a positive state. Therefore, if you are a reactive person, you are also a lazy person. I was lazy. I thought everything should just come to me. I had already put so much effort into everything I did…why was it not just happening? Why did I have to continue doing even more work? Fact is, it wasn’t until I started being proactive that things started happening for the better. Now that it is happening, it is going to take even more work to get where I envision.

 I am going to be proactive for as long as I live, because having lived most of my life in the reactive state was miserable. It was depressing. I never got where I wanted to be. I was in a job I didn’t necessarily like. I had no control over my schedule. All I could do was hold on and keep going. I was in control of my own destiny, but I kept saying I wasn’t.

 I have now focused on developing my mind. I surround myself with quality people. I don’t stay in a negative state. I look at what I have in life instead of what I don’t have. I am living a total health life because I have chosen to be the type of person who is no longer driven by fear. Living in fear has kept me from my true destiny for far too long.

 Are you going to make a choice today to put in the effort to allow yourself to be happy? I give you permission to be happy. It’s ok. If you have family or people around you who you love, you must allow yourself to be happy. Why? Because how is anyone around you going to be happy if you aren’t? Whether you know it or not, living in a reactive state also tends to make you give off negative energy. If you are continuously giving negative energy, do you think you are positively influencing your family and friends? There’s no way!

 It’s time you put yourself to the test. Stop being afraid to fail. Stop limiting yourself. Plan and schedule so you can’t say “I don’t have the time.” We all have 24 hours in a day. How are you going to use YOUR time? Today is the day. Someday doesn’t exist. It’s time to get yourself in a place to where you can truly fulfill your destiny. I am right here beside you doing the same. Together, we will get through life and we will take it as it comes…and we WILL win!
